Solidarity among Nations
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Simplified
International Inequality (2437)
Due to an inequality of resources and economic capability, a real gap exists between nations. Some nations develop means of growth while others accumulate debts.
Serious International Problems (2438)
This question demands solidarity among nations. There must be a dismantling of those perverse mechanisms which impede the development of the poor nations. There must be an end to the abusive, sometimes usurious, financial systems, sinful commercial relationships, and the arms race. Nations must redefine their values and mobilize resources toward moral and economic development according to a hierarchy of values.
International Financial Reform (2439-2441)
Rich nations have a grave moral responsibility to ensure economic development in poorer nations. The rich nations have a duty in justice to pay a fair price for the resources gained from poorer countries.
Direct aid to needy countries (given for immediate extraordinary needs) does not provide any lasting solutions. The real need is to reform international financial institutions to promote more equitable relationships with poor countries. Efforts of poor countries to attain growth and liberation (especially in the area of farm labor) must be supported. Third World peasants form the overwhelming majority of the poor.
An increased sense of God and of self demands development of every society. This development multiplies material goods and puts them at the service of persons. In this way, dire poverty and exploitation are reduced.
