The CatholiCity Message

Volume II, Number 46 – December 16, 1998

Dear CatholiCity Citizen,

There will be no CatholiCity Message next week or the week after Christmas. In fact, the next CatholiCity Message will come in 1999, "Volume III."

1. MIKE CAN WRITE
The Internet has good points and bad points. We're often asked by parents "Should I let my children use the Internet?" Our answer is always the same. To wit, the Internet is a cesspool. One of the reasons why we started CatholiCity was to provide a clean "oasis" in a desert of filth. We recommend that you not allow your children online unless you are sitting right next to them until...you decide it's okay. This is your decision as a parent, and there are software screeners to take into account for your decision.

This is the reason why we generally do not implement webpages oriented toward children. On the other hand, one of the benefits of the Internet is that it provides a medium for information and viewpoints that otherwise would never break through the barriers erected by the so-called "mainstream" media. The Drudge Report is an obvious example. This free CatholiCity Message is another. This leads us to Mike Shaw.

Mike is a businessman in California. We've known him for several years, and were pleasantly surprised to recently discover that he is a clear, entertaining writer of short commentaries on movies and secular topics. His faith is reflected in his comments, but in an underlying way. We can't say that we agree with everything that he writes, but you are free to make up your own mind. You'll find dozens of Mike Shaw essays at this URL:

REAL ADVICE FROM SCHOOLCHILDREN

When your dad is mad and asks you, "Do I look stupid?", don't answer him.

Don't pick on your sister when she's holding a baseball bat.

Never trust a dog to watch your food.

Never spit when on a roller coaster.

Forget the cake–go for the icing.

Well, we've put another year to bed. Us thinks 1999 will be very interesting, even exciting. From all of us here at CatholiCity and the Mary Foundation, we wish you a happy and holy Christmas and a Blessed New Year. You will remain in our daily prayers.

Yours with Mary,

Your Friends at CatholiCity
