Creation is for Everyone (2402-2403)

In the beginning, God wanted all men to master the earth and enjoy its fruits. Creation is for everyone's good. However, the earth is divided up to guarantee man's security (which is now threatened by poverty and violence). This appropriation of property is meant to guarantee personal dignity and the gain of basic needs.

Even with the right to private property (acquired by work or by a gift), the original gift of earth belongs to everyone. This universal destination of goods remains primary, even though the common good demands the right to private property.

Benefiting the Greatest Number (2404-2406)

Men must see that their legitimately owned possessions are not just for themselves but are to benefit all (Second Vatican Council). The human owner is really God's steward, bringing forth fruit to benefit others (first of all his family).

Material and immaterial goods of production (land, factories, personal skills) must be used to benefit the greatest number. Goods for consumption should be used moderately by their owners so he can help the sick and poor.

Political authority can regulate the right to ownership for the common good.
